OK! Onam in Kerala - A Cultural Spectacle

10 - 17 September, 2019 | INR 20500 per person

Trip Details

Let's Go Kerala this Onam! A cultural extravaganza not to be missed.

Festivals are true celebrations in God's Own Country; occasions when grandeur prevails over the characteristic simplicity of the Kerala lifestyle. Be it the state festival of Onam or the one at a local place of worship, new attire and sumptuous feasts are a must for the celebrations.

Besides being occasion for merry-making, festivals of Kerala have traditionally been preservers of the art and culture of this land. Whether religious or social, traditional or modern, a festival here is never complete without an art event.

Folk music, graceful dances, extravagant feast, vivacious games, bejeweled elephant parades, traditional snake boat races and flamboyant flower decorations, primeval martial arts performances all of these make Onam the festival of happiness and merriment.

The harvest festival of Onam is based on the myth of the homecoming of King Mahabali, a demon king who gave Kerala its golden age. The celebration of Onam is spread over ten days and culminates on the Thiruonam day.

Come... experience the authenticity of Kerala with us.

The snake boats used for this race are called Palliyodams. The credit for the design is given to Lord Krishna himself, the chief deity at the Aranmula Sree Parthasarathy Temple. He is said to have appeared on these shores on a raft made of six bamboos, giving the village its name – Aranmula or Six Bamboos. We join in the festival celebrations, a spectacular event in which thousands of oarsmen bring down their oars in unison to the rhythm and gusto of the frenetic notes of vanjipattu (boat song) along with countless people who throng the banks of the river Pampa to cheer the majestic snake boats. The famous metallic mirror of Aranmula is universally noted for its excellence in craft. Bell metal is tamed, tempered and polished to give a mirror like reflection. This noted handiwork stands out as a symbol of excellence in traditional metallic craft in Kerala. We try to visit one of those units where the mirrors are made.
