It all began with a bold decision in 2012. Sarathy, a young professional with a secure corporate job, found himself yearning for something more—a life that didn’t revolve around spreadsheets and deadlines but around stories, experiences, and the world beyond his desk. Against the odds, he chose to walk away from stability and embark on a path less traveled.

But Sarathy’s journey wasn’t without challenges. Born with poliomyelitis in his left leg, he grew up learning to adapt, persevere, and embrace life’s adventures. His condition didn’t define him; it fueled his determination to explore the world and inspire others to do the same.

His travels started small, with solo backpacking trips that took him to hidden corners of the globe. Along the way, Sarathy discovered not just breathtaking landscapes but also the power of connection—whether it was sharing stories with locals or meeting fellow travelers who became lifelong friends. These experiences planted the seed for what would eventually become Unusual Escapes (registered as The Unusual Travel Company).

In 2014, Sarathy led his first group trip, blending his love for storytelling, exploration, and community-building. What began as a passion project soon grew into a thriving community of like-minded travelers who craved authentic, immersive experiences. Over the last decade, Sarathy has personally led more than 200 group trips, each one meticulously planned and personally curated after his own explorations.

For Sarathy, Unusual Escapes is more than a business—it’s a way of life. His itineraries aren’t pulled from guidebooks; they’re crafted from his personal recces, his conversations with locals, and his love for uncovering the stories that make each destination unique.
